When you think about it...
Think about the most beautiful wedding photos you have ever seen involving the couple. One thing that you may or may not have noticed is how connected they seem to feel in those images. The most important element of wedding photos is capturing how intimate the couple is. Most couples are not "models," and don't profess to be. So how do they all look like models? GREAT question! By simply interacting with one another. Intimacy comes in many forms ranging from laughter to staring romantically or lovingly at one another.
Intimacy...
I find that the best way to loosen up my clients and showcasing their love for each other is to place them in a beautiful setting and give them space and time with each other. Allow them to communicate without words by simply looking at each other. I have had SO many different reactions to this technique; from laughter to tears. No matter what their reaction, it's never wrong. What you're feeling in the moment is what makes the photo genuine. I love seeing how a couple's personality really shines when they allow themselves to let go.
Touching...
A HUGE part of intimacy is touching. I encourage my couples to ABT! Always Be Touching. it doesn't have to be all-over touching, or any specific type of touching. If your hands are on each other, you are showing intimacy. I usually ask my clients to fill their partner's gaps with their body.
Engagement is much the same...
Engagement photos are great practice for your wedding day photos! I always encourage my couples to never stop touching. The smallest and simplest touches can read so beautifully in an image.
Kissing, Holding Hands, Hugging, Dancing...
YES YES YES YES all the YES! If you are playing with your partner in any natural way, it is alllll good. I love face snuggles, kisses on the head and cheek, hands on the face, holding hands, yes to everything. It is my belief that you can really see a couple's true feelings by the way they play with one another. When we work together, NEVER stop playing, and I will never stop shooting. Sure, we will get those "printable moments" for the family, but you will find that the most important photos from your wedding day will be the images that depict your true joy with JUST BEING with one another.
When you hire me as your wedding photographer...
One of the things I ALWAYS tell my couples is to just HAVE FUN. I am here to document the best day of your LIFE. The most important part of photographing your day is to make sure that you have fun in the process. Do not forget that your wedding is about you as a couple, and the most important images from the day will be those that depict you having FUN, being "in the moment," laughing, playing, touching, kissing, hugging, and being genuinely YOU.
My process includes "setting the stage" which basically means I will put you in scenes, and do general posing, but the rest is up to you. Do what you feel in the moment. Don't worry about what I am expecting you to do, do what comes naturally. I am ONLY expecting you to be truly with one another.
